Acupuncture is an form of Chinese medicine that involves the insertion of sterile needles to points along the body corresponding to specific organ meridians. Meridians are channels mapped throughout the body which represent a pathway of energy flow, or “Qi”. Acupuncture acts to remove blockages in these meridians and restore the smooth flow of Qi. A full health profile is taken of each patient and an individualized plan is created. Once the needles are inserted, they can remain for 15 – 60 minutes depending on the symptom picture. The practitioner may manipulate the needles when needed in order to maintain a connection with the meridian and support the flow of Qi. During training, a “clean needle” technique is taught in order to ensure sterility of the needles.
